If you have any length of a commute to school or work and you don’t listen to podcasts you are doing it wrong. Stop listening to the same Top 40 songs everyday, and dive into the world of podcasts! There is something out there for everyone! Below you will find a few of my favorites (in a variety of categories).
1. SERIAL … OF COURSE
Do you binge watch tv shows? Well soon you’ll be wanting to binge watch this hit podcast. Serial tells a story week to week and is hosted by Sarah Koenig. The first season infamously covers a murder of a popular high school student and her ex-boyfriend who was convicted of the crime. Was he wrongly convicted? You decide! Serial is now covering a new story in the second season of the podcast. I definitely suggest going back to the beginning and listening to all of the episodes in order. (If you fall in love with Serial I can’t help but give a shoutout to Crime Writers On: Serial, The Serial Serial, and Undisclosed who all talk about Serial in their own independent podcasts)
Every other Friday Phoebe Judge talks about a new crime, or part of the criminal justice system. Each episode is interesting in it’s own right. You can dive in and start listening to the episodes anywhere, but one of my all time favorites is, He’s Neutral. You will quickly want to listen to all of the episodes!!!
Lieutenant Joe Kenda talks about his 23 years of experience in the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Homicide Division. Each episode opens the listeners eyes to things you may never know about law enforcement.
4. DESIGN LIFE
Design Life is hosted by two young female designers, Femke and Charlie. This podcast is a very conversational podcast about design and side projects. They talk about a variety of topics from time management to setting goals. This is one of my favorite design podcasts because they aren’t old veterans in the design community, but rather very successful young graphic designers.
5. CREATIVE MORNINGS
Creative Mornings is in a bunch of cities around the world, where on one Friday morning every month creators gather to discuss that month’s theme. Every chapter invites their own speaker and in this podcast they cover the best of the best talks done at Creative Mornings around the world.
6. 99% INVISIBLE
Roman Mars discusses a new topic every week. The podcast focuses on “design, architecture & the 99% invisible activity that shapes our world.” Roman Mars does an excellent job of making the mundane entertaining!
7. #GIRLBOSS RADIO
Sophia Amoruso interviews a new #girlboss every week. She also asks people on Instagram and Twitter to share their #girlboss moment of the week! All of her episodes encourage girls everywhere to follow their dreams and just be a #girlboss!
8. CALL YOUR GIRLFRIEND
WARNING: Ann Friedman and Aminatou Sow will make you want to call your girlfriend! Every week I feel as if I am a fly on the wall listening to their conversations.
Being a Adult
Meghan Tan does the most Millennial thing possible. She makes a podcast about being a millennial. While it might just be
10. ADULTHOOD MADE EASY
Sam Zabell, RealSimple.com’s associate editor, asks the tough questions. No seriously, Sam seems to know the questions that I am thinking as I listen to the podcast. Every week she interviews a expert in a field and talks to them about what to wear to work, what to cook for dinner, how to save money and so so much more!
11. THE MESSAGE
The Message is a Sy-Fy 8 episode podcast which follows the reports of Nicky Tomalin about a message from space that was received over 70 years ago. This is another podcast you can definitely binge listen to (I sure did)!
12. THE BLACK TAPES
The Black Tapes is another fictional podcast. Alex Reagan spends her time trying to discover whether or not the supernatural does exist. (another great podcast to binge listen to!)
13. THE GILMORE GUYS
If you are excited as I am that Gilmore Girls is coming back to Netflix, a great way to review all of the episodes with a funny spin listening to Demi and Kevin dive into the specifics of each episode of the series. They have a variety of guests on the show that give an interesting spin to the show!
Aaron Mahnke dives into a a new tale of folklore in every episode. While some of the episodes are quite creepy others are simply interesting. Each episode covers a new topic so they are perfect if you just want to listen to one episode here and there.
Startup is about exactly what the title says it’s about, a startup. Startup is about the behind the scenes of starting a business that most people don’t ever see or here. They have two seasons, one about Gimlet Media, a podcast network (the company that produces the podcast), and the other about Dating Ring, a company that uses both technology and old fashioned matchmaking. BONUS: If you are looking for fantastic podcasts, any of the Gimlet Media podcasts are amazing.
Well that’s it for me, what are some of your favorite podcasts, let me know in the comments below!
